When WDW first introduced Disney Pin trading the purpose was to have guests get to know each other more while at the theme parks. Disney Pin trading exploded beyond even what WDW Disney trading pins creators ever imagined. While in recent years the fervor may have subsided a little bit, the core reason for pin trading is still there. Disney Pins and Disney Pin Trading made the Theme Parks a completely different experience for the guests. It created a reason to talk and meet with other guests and cast members from around the world. It is a great icebreaker to see someone with a lanyard and ask him or her if they would like to trade. I think this is why it became so popular.
Two sites I want to mention right away are Pin Pics and Dizpins. You can click on their names to link to those two sites. They are full of valuable and helpful information. Pin Pics is basically a database of pins produced, while Dizpins gives up to the day activity of what is happening in the pin-trading world. And of course there is the Official Disney Pin Trading site also! Visit these three sites for a wealth of information.
If you want to learn more about the pin making process do visit our Hard Rock Cafe Hobby Jargon webpage. Pins are made the same whether Disney, Warner Brothers, Hard Rock Cafe, or Planet Hollywood. And on the Hard Rock page there is a good section on how pins are made and the types of pins.
Here are some general tips on how to enjoy this hobby:
-
Specialize: As with any collection one has to "specialize" in a particular type or group. It would be nice and very ambitious, but probably impossible to collect every Disney pin produced. So decide what area you want to focus on such as Epcot, Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, MGM, Disneyland, Tokyo Disney, Princesses, Villains, Theme Park rides, or characters from a favorite movie (you get the idea).
-
Participate: I mentioned the two groups above, but there are many more available on the internet, and maybe even in your own home town. But you need to make friends with people that have similar interests as you do so you can trade and/or share general information. Plus, the real fun of collecting is to be able to meet and enjoy being with other people that have similar interests to yours.
-
Display Your Pins!: Whether in a trader pin bag, frame, or case you want to enjoy your pins by displaying them. The pins themselves are pieces of artwork that can be enjoyed. Plus certain pins may bring back good memories of a trip or a special friend. So, make up some kind of presentation to be enjoyed by you and others.
